Monday afternoon, I intended to post here for the first time in a month sharing that I was pregnant.

Instead, Monday morning at the OB appointment, the ultrasound tech said ‘i’ll be right back’ after 5 minutes of silence scanning my belly and I knew that what she was coming back with was a doctor to give me bad news.

‘I’m so sorry’… that’s all I heard before I blacked out. No heartbeat. Not viable. Options. Let’s move to a different room.

What is actually happening. This isn’t real. I’m in a bad dream. There’s no way. This baby talks to me every day. I already picked out his name. I put so much on hold to have this baby. Nightmare.

I wanted this baby. I didn’t plan this baby. But I knew he was coming. And I wanted this baby. Now life will never be the same.

Carrying this baby for the last 6 weeks has been so challenging. Unrelenting nausea. Vomiting. Heartburn. Exhaustion. Can’t eat. Can’t think. But I felt so connected to this baby.

And now, I’m pregnant without an alive baby. I feel pregnant without an alive baby. How cruel.

A loss is a loss is a loss. At 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 14 weeks, 40 weeks… it’s a loss. And for how ‘often this happen’ we sure don’t talk about it nearly enough. At all, really.

So, this is me. Raw. 8w4d pregnant with a baby that has no heartbeat. Wishing I could understand how this is happening. And wondering how one gets their shit together so they can continue to live on.

And while yes, there are benefits… there are also risks. Yet it’s handed out as a blanket medication to almost every woman birthing in a hospital, often without consent, without discussion, and without you even knowing it’s happening.

Here’s what “normal” blood loss actually looks like:
After a vaginal birth, the average is around 500ml.
After a cesarean, it’s closer to 1,000ml.

Anything below that is considered physiological and not emergent.

Your body is built for this. And it comes equipped with its own oxytocin, the real stuff, that kicks in naturally when you hold your baby skin to skin, smell their head, hear them cry, breastfeed.

Here’s the thing:
It doesn’t help. It actually creates a higher risk of tearing. And more often than not it’s done without moms knowledge or consent.

Providers are just doing it because they can’t seem to keep their fingers to themselves. In any other scenario this would be labeled as assault, but because it’s happening in L&D it’s ok? No. it’s not. And i’m sick of women being taken advantage of.

Discuss a HANDS OFF delivery with your provider before you go into labor AND when you arrive AND when you start pushing. No fingers need to be in or near you while you’re pushing your baby out.

Providers are just doing it because they can’t seem to keep their fingers to themselves. In any other scenario this would be labeled as assault, but because it’s happening in L&D it’s ok? No. it’s not. And i’m sick of women being taken advantage of.

Discuss a HANDS OFF delivery with your provider before you go into labor AND when you arrive AND when you start pushing. No fingers need to be in or near you while you’re pushing your baby out.
